Reflections on the 2007 Fall Retreat.
The Fall Retreat is over again for another year, but the warmth of the fellowship and sharing of God's love lingers on. Enjoy the following reflection from our national LWML president, Jan Wendorf, who attended the 2007 SWD Fall Retreat:
"A woman named Viola [Viola Lueck -- see her picture in the photo gallery] came up to me and told me she had been in the LWML for 65 years! She was a young bride of 19, married to a pastor who had a call to the greater Chicago area. Some of the women from their church were at the founding convention of the LWML, returned to their congregation and she joined the LWML with them. Viola is a widow now, but she is still serving the Lord with gladness: she volunteers at a local nursing home where she reads devotional materials and parts of the Bible to people who are having difficulty reading. What a blessing to talk with her and see the joy of the Lord sparkle in her eyes. What a legacy of service and love we as leaders experience; encouragement for all of us, too."
Today Jan sent a postscript to the story. She's been in Portland, Oregon recently, attending the Host Committee meeting for our 2009 national LWML convention and reports:
"A woman came up to me and said she heard that I had met her godmother, who was Viola! The woman’s name is Carolyn Stucky and she is serving as the chairman of the child care committee for the convention. She lives in Milwaukie, Oregon -- spelled that way! Small Lutheran world, isn’t it?"
