Dumplings and Conversation at Luther Memorial Chapel --
Contributed by Carolyn Blum --
What a great time the LWMLers had who gathered on September 24 at Luther Memorial Chapel in Shorewood. Under the direction of Bessie Fick, International Student Ministry Coordinator, volunteers lent their hands to making and eating delicious Chinese dumplings, and engaging in conversation. One of those volunteers was Janet Vogel, who made the trek all the way from Kiel!
The ladies visited with young people from many ethnic groups; some were very fluent in English and some needed a little bit of help. All were eager to practice their English skills by visiting with the volunteers and telling them about their country, how they are adapting to American life and interesting tidbits about their stay. Some asked for help with this or that and the volunteers were happy to lend their expertise where they could.
If you want to join in the fun and camaraderie, consider joining in an upcoming event. A Reformation party and pumpkin carving is planned for October, a thanksgiving dinner in November and a Christmas party with caroling in December.
All of these activities serve to build relationships between and among International students (many of whom are unchurched) and Americans. As they become more comfortable, we pray that the Holy Spirit will work in their hearts and we can share God’s saving love with them. It can come up in casual conversations; the volunteers explained Halloween to the students, and were able to toss in the facts about the Reformation, which occurs at the same time. The students had no knowledge of either.
Please prayerfully consider coming to some of these events. You’ll be glad you did!
